Finding Beauty Wherever You Go

There is really not much to see on the short walk from my hotel to the convention center in downtown Indianapolis, but, if you look real hard, no matter where you are, there is always something beautiful to see. A great example is the underpass on the way to the convention center. At first glance, it may be a little intimidating to walk through what feels like a dark alleyway, but the minute you enter, you are greeted by a beautiful mural painted in the otherwise drab surroundings. Every section of the tunnel is another cartoonish, painted panel, depicting a variety of simple pleasures as envisioned by the artist. I did a little digging, and the artist, Tom Torluemke, was commissioned by the Arts Council of Indianapolis in October 2011 in preparation for the Super Bowl. The Giants defeated the Patriots on February 5, 2012 at Lucas Oil Stadium just across the street from the underpass. The mural is 5,000 square feet, 355 feet long and consists of 19 panels, what a great way to start the day.

I have been to Indianapolis several times but, this is the first time I actually got to do some exploring. Just a few short blocks from the convention center is Monument Circle. A great walk after a long day at the market. The Soldiers and Sailors Monument is the star attraction, rising 284 feet from ground level. Although I didn’t actually climb the 331 steps, this has to be a bucket list do-over! I’ll be paying to take the elevator to the observation deck at the top! It really is amazing to have the opportunity to visit places like this. It makes my mind wander; sometime in the future, someone like me will walk by and take pleasure in viewing this sculpture from the past just as I did.
