Essential Oils for Jet Lag

One thing is for sure, traveling can be rough on the body in more ways than you think. For example, last year I attended a convention in California, it was my first trip there and I struggled with the three hour time difference; up at three in the morning and just couldn’t go back to sleep. It’s a weird feeling to feel like the sun should be up but it’s pitch black outside. To make matters worse, your body says it’s time for bed but you still have to attend a dinner meeting! Ten PM isn’t that late to stay out, but to me it was one in the morning! The worst part was coming home. I was completely exhausted but I had already started to acclimate to California time so I had the same struggle in reverse. It took a few days to feel like myself again. Last year was my first trip to Denver as well. I battled for weeks with dry skin shortly after. I didn’t make the association then, but the same thing happened this year. Come to find out it’s a real thing. Denver is nicknamed the mile high city because the official elevation is 5,280 feet, exactly one mile. The arid climate and high winds mixed with the higher elevation quickly dehydrates the skin and believe me it is no joke! I’ll know better next time and will start drinking extra water before going and make sure to use extra moisturizer while I’m there.

I am learning as I go, and have started looking for natural ways to cope with some of the physical stresses of traveling. Although Denver is only a two hour time difference, jet lag was a real concern after my trip to California. I discovered some essential oils that were supposed to help alleviate those symptoms. I decided to check them out and I have to say, they seemed to help. I settled on a before, during and after regiment, it settled my preflight nerves, invigorated me in the morning, and helped me sleep. I’ll post the regiment below, each mixture was put in a mini cobalt blue 1ML glass bottle. At home I added the oils to my bath and then used my room diffuser overnight, at the hotel I heated up some water in the microwave and added the oils to it. I sat in the bed, held the cup under my nose for a few minutes, and then set it on the nightstand next to me. In the morning I did the same thing. but set the cup on the bathroom counter while I was putting on my makeup. It really was a nice spa-like treat. I think I will be using this for every trip, even if I am in the same time zone.

The Night Before: 2 drops rosemary, 2 drops lemon grass essential oils. 

During PM: 1 drop lavender, 1 drop geranium essential oils.

During AM: 2 drops rosemary, 2 drops eucalyptus essential oils.

Home: 2 drops peppermint, 2 drops geranium essential oils.
